Holly Michelle Phillips (néeGilliam; born June 4, 1944) is an American singer, songwriter and actress. She rose to fame as one of the two female vocalists in the musical quartet the Mamas & the Papas in the mid-1960s. Her voice was described by Time magazine as the "purest soprano in pop music".[1] She later established a successful career as an actress in film and television beginning in the 1970s.

A native of Long Beach, California, she spent her early life in Los Angeles and Mexico City, raised by her widowed father. While working as a model in San Francisco, she met and married John Phillips in 1962 and went on to co-found the vocal group the Mamas & the Papas in 1965. The band rose to fame with their popular singles "California Dreamin' " and "Creeque Alley", both of which she co-wrote. They released five studio albums before their dissolution in 1970. Michelle Phillips was a member of popular 1960s folk/pop group The Mamas and the Papas. The band had hits with "California Dreamin'" and "Monday, Monday," before disbanding. Phillips made her film debut in 1971 with The Last Movie starring Dennis Hopper. She and Hopper were briefly married in 1970. Continuing to pursue an acting career, Phillips appeared in Valentino in 1977. She enjoyed some success on television in the late 1980s and early 1990s on the prime time soap opera Knots Landing. In more recent years, Phillips has made guest appearances on such shows as 7th Heaven. She is also the mother of singer Chynna Phillips of Wilson Phillips fame.

Raised by a single father, she lived in Mexico City for several years. Phillips eventually returned to Los Angeles where she attended high school.

Michelle Phillips is an American actress and singer whose career spans over five decades. She initially came to prominence as a vocalist in the group The Mamas and the Papas in 1965. She had her first major screen appearance in a minor role in Dennis Hopper's The Last Movie (1971) before being cast as Billie Frechette in the John Dillinger biopic Dillinger (1973), which earned her a Golden Globe Award nominations for Most Promising Newcomer.
