His full name is Abdullah bin Mas’ud bin Ghafil Al-Hudzali. His nickname is Abu Abdurrahman. He often attributed to his mother, since his father died during the time of ignorance, whereas his mother was able to live until the light of Islam shone and she embraced Islam. That is why she was often dubbed “Umm Abd” (mother of Abd), while Ibn Mas’ud was dubbed “Ibn Ummi Abd” (son of Ummu Abd). He was one of the earliest group that embraced Islam at the dawn of its calling, and emigrated twice -to Habasya and Medina-. He also joined the battle of Badr and he was the one that killed Abu Jahl in that battle.

Short Life Story of Abdullah Ibn Masud (R.A.)

Abdullah Ibn Masud (R.A.) was a companion of the Prophet Mohammad (S.A.W.). He was also known by the kunya Abu Abdul-Rahman.

Abdallah ibn Masud (R.A.) was born in Makkah in about 594 C.E. His parents name was Masud ibn Ghafil and Umm Abd bint Abdwadd, both of whom were from the Tamim tribe

When he was still in his youth, not yet past the age of puberty, he used to roam the mountain trails of Makkah far away from people, tending the flocks of a Quraish chieftain, Uqbah ibn Muayt. People called him "Ibn Umm Abd” son of the mother of a slave. 

One day while tending the flocks, Abdullah (R.A.) saw two men, middle-aged and of dignified bearing, coming towards him from a distance. They were obviously very tired. They were also so thirsty that their lips and throat were quite dry.

Abd Allah ibn Mas'ud (Arabic: عبد الله بن مسعود, romanized: ʿAbd Allāh ibn Masʿūd; c. 594 – c. 653) was a companion of the Islamic prophet Muhammad whom Sunni Islamic tradition regards the greatest interpreter of the Quran of his time and the second ever.[1][2] He was also known by the kuniyaAbu Abd al-Rahman.[3]: 289 

Early years

Abd Allah ibn Mas'ud was born in Mecca in about 594[4]: 121  a son of Masud ibn Ghafil and Umm Abd bint Abdwadd, both of whom were from the Hudhayl tribe,[4]: 14  believed to be slaves,[5]: 16  or otherwise of low social status. However, Umm Abd's mother, Hind bint Al-Harith, was from the Zuhra clan of the Quraysh, and Masud made an alliance with her brother.[4]: 14
