Patrick Soon-Shiong, MBBCh, MSc, FRCS (C), FACS
Patrick Soon-Shiong, MD, is a surgeon, scientist, inventor, and philanthropist with over 500 issued worldwide patents and 100 scientific publications. He serves as Chairman and Chief Executive Officer of NantWorks, an ecosystem of companies with developments in a wide variety of complex industries, from medical science to biomaterials, from data transport to AI and from communications to mobility.
In 2001, Dr. Soon-Shiong founded American Pharmaceutical Partners (APP), which produced over 300 million vials of injectable products annually for cancer, infectious disease, and critical care. In 2005, the FDA approved his invention Abraxane, the nation’s first protein nanoparticle chemotherapy for breast, lung, and pancreatic cancer. Abraxane has achieved over a billion dollars in annual global sales and has been placed in the medical history collections at the Smithsonian National Museum of American History.

[edytuj | edytuj kod]Urodził się w 29 lipca 1952 r. w Port Elizabeth[1]. Jego rodzicami byli Chińczycy, którzy opuścili swój kraj w czasie II wojny światowej. Jego ojciec zajmował się ziołolecznictwem[2]. Uzyskał dyplom bachelor’s degree z medycyny[3] na University of the Witwatersrand. Odbył staż w szpitalu ogólnym w Johannesburgu, który nigdy wcześniej nie przyjmował chińskich studentów. Ordynator oddziału postawił mu warunek, że musiał ukończył studia przynajmniej z czwartym wynikiem na roku, co Soon-Shiong zrealizował. Mimo to niektórzy z afrykanerskich pacjentów odmawiali leczenia przez Chińczyka. Pracował na oddziale onkologii. W latach 70. XX w. leczył rannych w powstaniu Soweto[2].

Wits-educated billionaire scientist Dr Patrick Soon-Shiong (MBBCh 1975) and his wife, Michele Chan-Sam (BA 1986), speak to the National Museum of American History about their South African roots.
Soon-Shiong: Michele and I both come from Hakka families. The original Hakka in China believed in total community collaboration, and the warrior is the woman, and she is as strong as the man.
My parents came to South Africa after the Japanese invasion of China, and they were simple shopkeepers. My father was an herbalist in China, so in South Africa he was also a Hakka Association doctor, and every two months a metal biscuit can would arrive from China filled with foul smelling weeds. If anybody had a fever, a cough, or a boil, there would be a knock on the door, they'd walk into the house, and he would concoct something. I'd sit there and watch that whole activity. I think my father’s work drove a lot of what I'm doing today because it started influencing my belief
