The Krankies have had an up and down career

For almost as long, they’ve been performing the same slapstick act with 5’6” Ian playing the straight man to his 4’5” wife’s cheeky schoolboy character as Wee Jimmy Krankie whose catchphrase Fan-Daby-Dozy has long echoed round every playground in the land.

But if they find anything odd in being married yet earning their living by fooling around like an unhinged father and son, you wouldn’t know it.

“I don’t care what people think,” says Janette. “It has made us a livelihood and we’ve sustained it. It wouldn’t have lasted if it wasn’t funny. Adult audiences know we are man and wife. The funny bit is me at 68 being the only schoolboy with a bus pass!”

Both born in Scotland in 1947, they met at Glasgow Pavilion Theatre in December 1965, where she had a role in panto and he was working as an electrician above the stage.

Who are Janette and Ian Tough?

Janette and Ian Tough are a Scottish comedy duo, best known for portraying schoolboy rascal Wee Jimmy Krankie and paternal figure Ian Frankie.

Ian, from Glasgow, was born March 26, 1947. Janette was then born two months later on May 16 in  Queenzieburn, near Kilsyth.

They met at the age of 19 at Glasgow’s Pavilion Theatre where Janette performed as a dancer while Ian worked as an electrician.

The couple got married in 1969 in Kirkintilloch and they found fame in the 1970s as a comedy duo and have since carved a successful career in music, TV and panto.
