Jehangir Ratanji Dadabhoy Tata is born in Paris, the second of four children of Ratanji Dadabhoy Tata (Jamsetji Tata’s first cousin) and his wife, Suzanne Briere.

The Tatas purchase a house on the beach in Hardelot, France, where the young ‘Jeh’, as he is fondly known, is enthralled by their neighbour, aviator Louis Bleriot. The family alternates between Bombay and Paris until 1917.

JRD is drafted into the French Army for a year. In 1925, RD Tata summons his son back to India.

In India, he spends a year learning the ropes in Jamshedpur. When his father passes away the same year, JRD is brought on to the Board of Directors in Tata Sons.

JRD Tata becomes the first person to qualify for a pilot’s licence in India, and holds Private Licence No. 1.

JRD Tata marries Thelma Vicaji, affectionately known as ‘Thelly’.

It is a measure of the man and the life he lived that long before his demise, Jehangir Ratanji Dadabhoy Tata came to represent an exalted idea of Indianness: progressive, benevolent, ethical and compassionate. It did not really matter that the country itself failed this utopian test. JRD, as he was known to commoner and king, had by then transcended the frailties of his milieu.

As an adolescent, JRD loved France and flying more than anything else. By the time he stepped into the autumn of his existence, he had devoted some 50 years to heading and defining a unique business conglomerate, and just as long to championing the interests of India and her myriad people. The evolution, from a thoughtful if self-indulgent young man to a pan-Indian icon revered even by those who knew little about business, contains the essence of the JRD story.

Jehangir Ratanji Dadabhoy Tata (29 July 1904 – 29 November 1993) was an Indian industrialist, philanthropist, aviator and former chairman of Tata Group.

Born into the Tata family of India, he was the son of noted businessman Ratanji Dadabhoy Tata and his wife Suzanne Brière. He is best known for being the founder of several industries under the Tata Group, including Tata Consultancy Services, Tata Motors, Titan Industries, Tata Salt, Voltas and Air India. In 1982, he was awarded the French Legion of Honour and in 1955 and 1992, he received two of India's highest civilian awards: the Padma Vibhushan and the Bharat Ratna. These honours were bestowed on him for his contributions to Indian industry.[1]
