The Dallas Decoder Interview: Kristina Hagman

Kristina Hagman

“The Eternal Party,” a biography of Larry Hagman written by his daughter Kristina Hagman, was published last month. I interviewed her recently about the book and her memories of her famous father.

Let me start by expressing my condolences on the recent death of your mom, Maj Hagman. I enjoyed learning more about her in your book. She was a pretty resourceful woman.

She was a doer. Resilient, handy, innovative. She came up with all sorts of things.

For those who haven’t read “The Eternal Party,” can you talk about why you decided to write it?

I was hoping [the book] would instigate larger communication about my father — that other people would then share their stories, and lo and behold, that is just what’s happening. I’m hearing so much. It’s making the whole picture of my father so much more complete. Snarky don't read too much into it. Parents, like children, have faults - we all do. It's what makes us more interesting. Larry had faults. The difference between the likes of Larry Hagman and myself is he had a public career. Actors/celebrities have a public persona, a life of glitz, glamour and visiting exotic locations. But they also have a personal life, mostly hidden from view. If they or someone else then wishes to expose the underbelly of that person should we be really shocked at discovering that person had flaws?

I have not read the book. I have no intentions of reading it. Did Larry have affairs? I don&

Hagman attended San Francisco State University where she studied dance, psychology and science. After three years of college, she landed a summer acting job in The Sound of Music. Acting was in her blood, her grandmother was stage actress Mary Martin and her father was Larry Hagman of Dallas fame, so she briefly explored acting.

Hagman grew up painting beside her mother and grandmother. She later studied at the DeYoung Museum Art School in San Francisco, California (1977, 1978); the Art Students League, New York (1981,1982); the Graphics Workshop with Ron Pokrasso in Santa Fe (1983); the Santa Fe Institute of Art with Richard Diebenkorn and Nathan Oliveira (1986,1987); the University of New Mexico, Albuquerque (1987-1988); the Santa Fe Institute of Art with Wayne Thiebaud (1990); and the College of Santa Fe, New Mexico (1994, 1995).
