A pathbreaker in many areas, DePreist came to a life in music relatively late, but his love for it was sparked early on. He was born on November 21, 1936, and as he was growing up in Philadelphia, DePreist was encouraged in his interest in music by his aunt, the world-famous contralto Marian Anderson. He got his bachelor’s degree at the University of Pennsylvania’s Wharton School in 1958 and intended to go to law school afterward, but found his interests were turning more toward music—during college, he’d played percussion in a jazz quintet and composed. He began studying composition at the Philadelphia Conservatory with Vincent Persichetti (Juilliard faculty 1947-87), but a pair of chance trips to the podium, the second one in 1962, convinced him that conducting was his future. In 1964, DePreist hit the professional jackpot by being one of the winners of the esteemed Dimitri Mitropolous International Music Competition for Conductors. [modifier | modifier le code]James DePreist[2] est issu d'une famille de musiciens, sa mère Ethel[3] était une chanteuse, et sa tante la contraltoMarian Anderson qui secourt sa mère lorsque son père décède alors qu'il a 6 ans.
Il travaille la composition avec Vincent Persichetti[4] au Conservatoire de Philadelphie (1959-61) et est diplômé d'un Master of Arts de l'Université de Pennsylvanie.
Carrière professionnelle
[modifier | modifier le code]Alors qu'il est en déplacement pour le service musical du département d'État des États-Unis, à Bangkok en 1962, il contracte la poliomyélite, qui le paralyse aux deux jambes et l'oblige à utiliser une chaise roulante, mais il poursuit tout de même sa carrière musicale (Bangkok, 1963-64) et en 1964, il remporte la médaille d'or au Mitropoulos International Conducting Competition, un concours international pour chef d'orchestre[5]. James DePreist was permanent conductor of the Tokyo Metropolitan Symphony Orchestra, director of conducting and orchestral studies at the Juilliard School and laureate music director of the Oregon Symphony. Widely esteemed as one of America’s finest conductors, during the past three decades he served as music director of L’Orchestre Symphonique de Québec, Sweden’s Malmö Symphony, L’Orchestre Philharmonique de Monte Carlo and the Oregon Symphony.
As a guest conductor he appeared with every major North American orchestra, and internationally he conducted in Amsterdam, Berlin, Budapest, Copenhagen, Helsinki, Manchester, Melbourne, Munich, Prague, Rome, Rotterdam, Seoul, Stockholm, Stuttgart, Sydney, Tel Aviv, Tokyo and Vienna. He made his London début with the London Symphony Orchestra at the Barbican in April 2005.
