Sadiq Abubakar Daba (1951/52 – 3 March 2021)[1] was a Nigerian actor and broadcaster.[2] In 2015, he won Africa Movie Academy Award for Best Actor for his role as "Inspector Waziri" in October 1.[3][4]

Education

He had his secondary education at St. Edward's Secondary School. He got higher degrees in many institutions including Ahmadu Bello University in Zaria.[5]

Career

Daba has worked as a broadcaster for Nigerian Television Authority. His acting career came to prominence in the late 1970s with his starring in Cockcrow at Dawn.[6]

In 2018 he was given the title "Garkuwan Nollywood" (when translated from Hausa language it means "Shield of Nollywood") by the stakeholders in the industry.[7]

Sickness and death

Daba announced his diagnosis of leukemia and prostate cancer in 2017 and was supported with fundraising by several Nigerians including Josephine Obiajulu Odumakin, Mabeloboh Center For Save Our Stars (MOCSOS).[8][9

While speaking at a programme where the University of San Diego, US, honoured him in 2011, Legendary Broadcaster Larry King told a touching story of how a small radio station gave him his first broadcast opportunity in life. There was pin drop silence as King captivated his audience with the interesting story. His baritone voice was interrupted with cheers and claps but he fired on.

Well, this is not about Larry King but our own Sadi Abubakar Daba who passed on, on Wednesday. Like King, the Nigerian pride got his own opportunity at a radio station in Kaduna in 1973 and ever since then, he never looked back until he took the final bow.

Sadiq Abubakar Daba, famously known as Sadiq Daba, is a veteran actor, producer, and director who spent about 40 years of his life behind and in front of the camera. From news reading to acting, his sterling career was crowned with awards and recognition.

He acted as Bitrus in Cock Crow At Dawn, the popular soap opera that ruled the TV in the 1970s and 1980. The stage name has stuck so much that even at 68, most people don’t know Sadiq Daba’s real name as they choose to call him Bitrus. “That is the power of television,” According to Sadiq Daba

Originally from Kano, he grew up in Sierra Leone where he attended St. Edwards Secondary School, Freetown, Sierra Leone,
He enjoyed listening to the radio and mimicked the leading broadcasters then. His father bought him a tape recorder which he used in honing his skills.
