Mahmoud Hessabi

Iranian nuclear physicist (1903–1992)

Mahmoud Hessabi (or Hessaby, Persian: محمود حسابی, 23 February 1903 – 3 September 1992) was an Iranian nuclear physicist and senator.[1] He was the minister of education in the cabinet of Prime Minister Mohammad Mosaddegh from 1951 to 1952.[2]

Life

Hessabi was born in Tehran to the family of Abbas and Goharshad Hessabi. His family's hometown is Tafresh, Markazi province, Iran.[3] His family moved to Beirut in 1907 when his father was appointed consul at the Iranian embassy.[4] There Hessabi attended primary school. He was still in secondary school when World War I started prompting the closure of his school; Hessabi continued his education at home and in 1922, he earned a degree in road engineering from the American University of Beirut. After briefly working for the Ministry of Roads, Beirut, Hessabi travelled to Paris for further education, he was awarded a degree in electrical engineering at the École Superieure d'Electricité and later a doctorate degree in 1927

Introduction

Professor Mahmoud Hesabi is considered one of Iran's most prominent scientific and cultural figures. Through his relentless efforts and extensive knowledge, he played a key role in the development of science and higher education in Iran and is recognized as the father of modern physics in the country. Professor Hesabi's life was marked from the outset by a deep passion for science and knowledge. Born in 1903 in Tehran, he exhibited remarkable talent in mathematics and physics from a young age. He pursued higher education in Europe and America, earning a PhD in physics from the University of Sorbonne in France. Upon returning to Iran, he made a foundational transformation in the structure of higher education by establishing the first faculties of science and engineering and participating in the establishment of the University of Tehran.

Professor Seyyed Mahmoud Hessabi was born in Tehran, Iran on February 25, 1903.He started his elementary school education from the age of 7 at the French Christians School in Beirut, Lebanon far from his birthplace, burdened with its associated hardships as a young foreigner. His high school years coincided with the outbreak of World War I because of which schools in Lebanon, including his, shut down. After two years of studying at home, he continued his studies at Syrian Protestant College and received his high school Diploma at the tender age of 14.


Professor Hessabi got his first bachelor’s degree in Literature at the age of 17 and went on to add degrees in Civil Engineering, mathematics, astronomy and biology from the American University of Beirut and the French University of Beirut.Blessed with a vigorous scientific spirit, he then travelled to Paris, France and added to his list of degrees with a Bachelor of Electrical Engineering and also a degree in Mining Engineering.
