Imagine. You come home after a hard day at school. You're hungry, so you reach for a bag of delicious corn chips. You don't know what's in there because there's no label, so you eat it...

OMG, there's GMOs in it! You didn't know! You might be harmed! That's why we need food labeling, to protect innocent children being targeted by evil corporations!

It all boils down to one pitch line: "You have a right to know what's in your food."

That's the gist of anti-GMO campaigner Rachel Parent's stump speech, delivered at schools and on television programs around the world. She's only 16 years old, but the Canadian high school student has become a canny international crusader in the effort to protect the world against the ecological and health dangers of foods made from genetically engineered crops. She may be the organic industry's most important weapon in convincing the public that genetically modified foods should be labeled. (Watch TedX talk here).

The Rachel Parent talk on GMOs mentions how the speaker became passionate about GMO labelling at the age of 12. Shortly after she founded a non-profit organization in Toronto, Canada called Kids Right To Know that encourages youth to be informed about the contents of their food (especially genetically modified organisms). As the founder of this organization, the speaker has participated in several rallies like the GMO Kids Right to Know Rally in Toronto. She also joined in the March Against Monsanto and spoke at environmental organizations, accruing to the Rachel Parent talk.

Rachel Parent continues to get involved in a variety of health and food events. She is also taking lessons in voice-over work, dance and guitar in addition to learning about animal conservation.

Biography:

Rachel Parent, 65 of Lewiston, passed away November 7, 2022, surrounded by her loving family.

Rachel was born on December 24, 1956, to Theodore and Noella Ouellette in Lewiston.

She is survived by her two children, son, Shaun Parent (wife, Wendy) and daughter Sarah Voss (husband, Buddy); 5 grandchildren, Tyler (wife, Emily) Alyssa Parent and Kaitlynn Birney (husband, Brandan) Keegan and Kali Voss and great-granddaughter Raeleigh Birney.

She is survived by brother Raymond Ouellette and sister Joline (Ronald) Guenette, all of Lewiston. She was predeceased by brother Normand (Jane) Ouellette and sisters Jeannette Picard, Irene and Doris Ouellette and sister-in-law Beatrice Ouellette. She is also survived by many nieces and nephews.

A Celebration of Life will be held at Funeral Alternatives, 25 Tampa Street in Lewiston on Friday, November 18, 2022, from 4:00 pm to 6:00 p.m.
