Actors Co-op Stages THE DIVINERS at the David Schall Theatre, Now thru 11/23

Actors Co-op presents its second show in its 2014-2015 season (and 23rd year of producing theatrical excellence in Los Angeles!) with THE DIVINERS, written by Jim Leonard, Jr. and directed by Mark Henderson. THE DIVINERS will preview tonight, October 15 and Thursday, October 16 at 8pm and will open on Friday, October 17 at 8pm and run through Sunday, November 23 at the Actors Co-op David Schall Theatre, 1760 N. Gower St. (on the campus of the First Presbyterian Church of Hollywood) in Hollywood.

New Haven to Hollywood, Take One

As a kid growing up in New Haven, Jim Leonard, Jr., thought he would be a teacher or lawyer, until writing changed all that. Today Leonard, 55, is a successful playwright, television writer and producer working in Hollywood. 

It’s his dream job.

“I really love this,” says Leonard. “I feel very lucky.”

Leonard has worked on several movie projects with Robert Altman, written a TV series called “Close to Home” that ran from 2005 to 2007, and written and produced numerous episodes for several TV series including “Dexter,” “The Marshal,” “Thieves” and “The Closer,” which is his current project. A recent episode that Leonard wrote entitled “Road Block,” guest starred Elizabeth Perkins and aired in December.

“What I like most about television is that it moves quickly. Within a month after I finish writing something, we’re shooting it, and then I’m editing and writing the next project,” says Leonard. “I love workin

Jim Leonard has published eight plays, including The Diviners, And They Dance Real Slow in Jackson,andBattle Hymn, with his theatrical honors including the Outer Critics Circle Award, an Ovation Award, the Dramatists Guild Award, and an LA Weekly Award for best play. The L.A. premiere of his powerful and poignantplay Anatomy of Gray is being presented by Open Fist Theatre Company, directed by Ben Martinfor a November 19, 2022 opening at Atwater Village Theatre.

Anatomy of Gray was originally staged at Circle Repertory Theatre in New York, and has subsequently been staged at American Conservatory Theatre in San Francisco, and at A Contemporary Theatre in Seattle. Leonard is currently adapting it into a musical with composers and lyricists Beth Thornley and Robert Cairns, with whom he collaborated on the musical Bad Apples.
