Goodluck Ebele Azikiwe JonathanGCFR GCON (born 20 November 1957)[1] is a Nigerian politician who served as the president of Nigeria from 2010 to 2015.[2] He lost the 2015 presidential election to former military head of state General Muhammadu Buhari and was the first incumbent president in Nigerian history to concede defeat in an election, thus allowing for a peaceful transition of power.[3]

Previously, Jonathan served as the vice president of Nigeria from 2007 to 2010 under the administration of Umaru Musa Yar'Adua;[4] and in oil-rich Bayelsa State as governor from 2005 to 2007, and deputy governor from 1999 to 2005.[5][2]

Goodluck Ebele Jonathan, president, Federal Republic of Nigeria, 2010-2015, was born in Otuoke, Bayelsa State on November 20, 1957, he attended St. Stephens and St. Michaels Primary Schools in Otuoke and Oloibiri respectively, and then Mater Dei High School at Imiringi for his post primary education. Both his primary and secondary schools were established by the missionaries in the rural Niger Delta region of Nigeria. He earned his Bachelor’s, Master’s and Doctorate degrees in Zoology, Hydrobiology and Fisheries Biology from the University of Port Harcourt, Nigeria.

Before joining politics, President Jonathan served as a Science Inspector of Education, a lecturer, and later as an Assistant Director in the Directorate of Environmental Protection and Pollution Control in the defunct Oil Mineral Producing Areas Development Commission (now Niger Delta Development Commission).

Goodluck Ebele Azikiwe Jonathan (born 20 November 1957)[1] is a Nigerian politician who was the President of Nigeria between 5 May 2010 and 29 May 2015. He was previously Governor of oil-richBayelsa State from 9 December 2005 to 29 May 2007, and became the Vice President of Nigeria on 29 May 2007. Jonathan is a member of the People's Democratic Party (PDP), which ruled Nigeria between May 1999 and May 2015. On 13 January 2010, a federal court gave him the power to carry out state affairs while President Umaru Musa Yar'Adua was being taken care of in a hospital in Saudi Arabia. On 24 February 2010, Yar'Adua came back to Nigeria, but Jonathan kept the President's power.[2] Yar'Adua died on 5 May 2010, and Jonathan officially became the President. He took the oath of office the next day.[3]
