Don Buchwald, Howard Stern’s ‘superagent’ and founder of namesake agency, dies at 88
Don Buchwald, who founded bicoastal talent agency Buchwald and notably represented Howard Stern in industry-altering negotiations with Sirius XM, died July 22 in the Berkshires in Massachusetts, an agency publicist confirmed. He was 88.
Buchwald died peacefully at home surrounded by his immediate family.
“Don was a true industry trailblazer,” daughter Julia Buchwald, president of the agency’s West Coast office, told The Times in an email Wednesday. “When asked about his negotiating style, he often said, ‘I aim to leave the negotiating table better friends than when we first sat down.’
“Don fostered this positivity within the agency walls and his incredible loyalty rang true with employees, clients and business colleagues,” she continued. “There will never be another Don Buchwald, and our team will proudly uphold his legacy and his generous approach to business.”

Born in Brooklyn in 1936, Donald Henry Buchwald was the youngest of five. His father owned a textile business, while his mother taught high school history. Buchwald often claimed that, unlike his academically motivated siblings, he was a “street kid” who enjoyed hanging out with friends. Nonetheless, he graduated from Lafayette High School and, at just 16, enrolled at Brooklyn College.

Don Buchwald, who founded his eponymous Hollywood talent agency Don Buchwald & Associates in 1977 and counted Howard Stern among his many clients, died Monday of natural causes. He was 88.
Buchwald passed away peacefully surrounded by his family, the company said in a statement Tuesday.
He got the nickname “Superagent” from Stern and is mentioned often — but rarely heard — on SiriusXM‘s The Howard Stern Show. “I’m not a particularly boastful person,” he told The New York Times in a 2018 interview.
Buchwald founded Don Buchwald & Associates in New York City with an original team of five agents and eventually opened a Los Angeles office in 1992. The company since has rebranded as Buchwald and currently has 130 employees spanning film, TV, theater, comedy, literary, commercials, social media, sports, animation, radio, gaming, voice-over digital/branded lifestyles and more.
